In Summer: More Action or Just a Splash?

Is it the tan or do people really let loose more in the summer? Is it the holiday relaxation or are your colleagues making beds bang against walls?

Are they the smiles from holiday memories or is your boss reminiscing about that kinky fantasy with legs up like the doors of a brand-new Lamborghini? It’s a widely held belief that during the warm summer months, people get it on more. But do we really get more action in the summer, or is it just an urban myth? – This week, we’re diving into the science to unravel this mystery.

WHY YOUR HEART BEATS FASTER IN SUMMER?

In favour of summertime frolics, we can put forward arguments supported by science or from youth media platforms like "Teen Vogue"

1. The sun backs us up (and who doesn’t…)

More sunlight means more vitamin D. Studies have linked vitamin D production with increased levels of testosterone, the male sex hormone. Moreover, the sun also boosts the production of other substances like endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin, which generate well-being and thus a good predisposition for a happy ending.

2. TINDER CONFIRMED IT

In summer, downloads and average usage time of dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Grindr also go up... It's a clue, and although many use them (or so they say) just to see what's cooking and meet people... where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

3. INCREASE IN SOCIAL COURTING.

Less clothing, more bodies, more tanned skin, free time, more social events, inhibition in places where no one knows you... like, the summer context and social plans invite you to let your hair down... or all of it.

4. THE 'HOLIDAY EFFECT'

Sociologically speaking, holidays come with a routine change, an escape from monotony and generally social contexts that awaken our desire for intimacy, openness, adventure (that smells like danger), thus promoting greater sexual activity.

WHY THIS SUMMER THE ONLY THING YOU’RE BRINGING HOME WET IS YOUR SWIMMING TRUNKS?

Well, on the flip side of the coin, we have arguments that totally bust the myth, like in summer we make less 'mayo' because

1. THE HEAT:

which flattens us... with a desire for horizontality, fan and activity limited to the thumb (for grabbing remote or mobile). If it also keeps you from sleeping... the disruption of sleep patterns and general well-being leads to a general decrease in energy and specifically, sexual desire.

2. DECREASE IN USE OF CONDOMS:

Manufacturers try to set up campaigns and all but during summer, there's a lower sale of condoms (the peak is on Valentine's Day, in February). You might say... maybe people are risking ending up pregnant... but no; because it turns out...

3. BABIES AREN'T MADE (STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT) IN SUMMER:

Birth peaks are in September and October, which indicates that people got busy in the winter when the cold and the need for a blanket did their thing.

4. BECAUSE WE HAVE LESS SEX:

And bam. As a society, generation by generation, less than our parents and less than our grandparents. Porn? Masturbation? More freedom at our fingertips reduces the allure of the 'forbidden'? Is sex not trendy anymore? Whatever you want, but the white sheets aren’t as wet as before.

A SUMMER… WITHOUT FIREWORKS

In the end... we haven’t found any study (serious) that supports that more is going on in the summer. There’s no clear consensus.

If you meet someone who tells stories of having scored big time... probably their summer reality looks more like he's spinning yarns bigger than a fisherman's tales. And on your side, if you scratched and won, congratulations; but if not, don’t sweat it. The kids sleeping in the next room, or the 20 mates crammed into the living room certainly didn’t help find the ideal moment of intimacy. Despite what’s said, summer is not the ideal season to fulfill your fantasies. Wait a week for the school term to start, then it really kicks off.
