Sustainability & Skincare: Greenwashing in Disguise?

Using Earth Day as an excuse, we want to share our 100% personal, subjective point of view, backed by the authority that gives us... our two cents on the matter:

  • The cosmetic industry has a pending issue with sustainability.

  • Many brands, under the guise of sustainability, overdo it and play Parcheesi (they eat one and sing 20) on purpose (to sell more) or, much worse, because they end up believing their own Captain Planet type salvation story.

  • That ends up making all of us who make creams look bad because people distrust.

  • We believe (and preach) in a sustainability more of lerele than of lirili, of actions in a low voice than of stickers shouting on jars, of impact and not of slogan,... sustainable and not UNsustainable.

The Beauty Industry = Pollution

IT’S A FACT. ANY INDUSTRY WITH THE WORD ‘INDUSTRY’ IN IT? IT POLLUTES.

That's how it is.

In the case of brands like ours, these are the top 5 enemies that most annoy Mother Earth:

  • Plastic production.📦The beauty industry produces 120 billion non-reusable plastic containers every year. That’s not even counting the sponges, tubes, and applicators.

  • CO2 emissions.💨 Making and shipping products comes at a cost. From ingredient sourcing to packaging to delivery, every step leaves a carbon footprint.

  • Water consumption.💦 It’s not just the water in your moisturiser—it’s the litres used to grow ‘natural’ ingredients, run factories, and keep production going.

  • Intensive farming. 🌱Some ‘eco-friendly’ ingredients (shea butter, rose oil, argan oil…) actually cause massive harm to ecosystems, soils, and local communities.

  • The most toxic ingredient of all: greenwashing.Pretending to be sustainable without actually being sustainable.

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK (OR JUST ANOTHER MARKETING GIMMICK?)

Well, that's it. Now that people are more aware of sustainability than in our grandparents' time, cosmetic brands have reacted... and some have gone overboard:

  • Labeling anything as ‘sustainable’ just because it’s vegan, natural, or organic—when that’s not even the same thing.

  • Slapping on labels like ‘toxic-free’ or ‘cruelty-free’ (which often mean absolutely nothing) to sound more eco-conscious.

  • Bragging about ‘helping local communities’ while failing to mention the carbon footprint of sourcing exotic ingredients from across the world.

  • Hiring a hot influencer to front a ‘save the oceans’ campaign while squeezing suppliers dry behind the scenes.

Basically, everyone’s out here claiming to be more eco-friendly than Greta Thunberg on a mission. But when it comes to actual sustainability? Let’s just say Thunberg would probably score higher on an A-level Chemistry exam than some of these brands do on their eco-practices.

THE RESULT? CONSUMERS AREN’T BUYING IT.

Research shows that 70% of shoppers don’t fully trust beauty brands’ sustainability claims. And honestly? We’ve earned that skepticism.

OUR TAKE: LESS TALK, MORE ACTION

Enough about others... how do we apply this to ourselves?

We're not trying to lecture anyone, just to share how we translate 'sustainability' into our part:

  • Sustainability is fundamental.Without it, we wouldn't have entered the world of creams. It's logical, reasonable, NORMAL. It's not something to hype about these days. It's like if we went out on the street proclaiming that we treat people well, that we pay our taxes or that we comply with the law... well, we expect no less.
  • We embrace green chemistry: which goes beyond efficient and effective use of resources and minimizing intermediate waste in manufacturing processes... rather than obsessing over whether an ingredient is of natural or chemical origin.
  • We say no to ‘toxic-free’ BS. It's not the ingredients that harm in cosmetics but the misleading words. That's why we prefer to tell you things simply and admit, when we have them and many, our mistakes.
  • We focus on full-circle sustainability. Because a business... either is sustainable... or it isn't. And sustainable, for us, implies money in the account at the end of the month... and also doing things right (paying suppliers fairly, not messing up the planet or anyone, offsetting our carbon footprint, ...).
  • We believe in responsible hedonism.Because we're tired of feeling bad when we forget our cloth bag when going to the supermarket. We believe it's possible for you to take a bath or enjoy how a cream feels without having to worry about ruining the Planet.

IN CONCLUSION

Yes, we also plant trees in the peaks of Europe to offset our CO2 and we're overhauling all our packaging to be increasingly sustainable... But today's topic is about going beyond easy newspaper headlines. If you buy from us, let it be because you want to and for the quality of our products... we'll do what's necessary behind the scenes to spread positive karma points as far as possible.

P.S.: Do you know a product that is made in Spain, in 100% recyclable packaging and in small batches to ensure its freshness? Our Tan-Tan-Go . Self-tanning serum for a tan that causes envy in the office and without the need for sun. In 5 days, you go up a shade naturally, evenly, and sustainably.

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK (OR I'M GREEN FOR THE SAKE OF PRETENSE)

With sustainability on everyone’s mind, beauty brands have jumped on the bandwagon—some more dramatically than others:

Labeling anything as ‘sustainable’ just because it’s vegan, natural, or organic—when that’s not even the same thing.

Slapping on labels like ‘toxic-free’ or ‘cruelty-free’ (which often mean absolutely nothing) to sound more eco-conscious.
